Falkland Islands Volunteer Corps 1914 Great War / WW1 hallmarked silver Presentation Award Badge, named to Pte C.F. Thompson (Charles Fisher Thompson) verso, with hallmarks for Birmingham 1926 and maker's mark for Firmin and Sons (F&S), weight of badge 36g, together with a Falkland Islands flag pin badge with maker's mark J.R. Gaunt, London verso, Falkland Islands 1833-1933 Centenary table medal and a hallmarked silver fob / medal with inscription 'R.E. Sports Cologne 1925 Company Relay', hallmarks for Birmingham 1925 and maker's mark for William James Dingley (WJD), weight of fob / medal 17g.
Charles Fisher Thompson moved to the Falkland Islands at the turn of century for contract work as a carpenter, and worked on the church at Port Stanley. He subsequently settled on the island, started a family and joined the Falkland Islands Volunteer Corps. According to the vendor / family history passed down, Charles was one of the local Falkland Island 'Kelpers' used as spotters at an outpost on the islands due to their knowledge of sea distances and currents. In 1914 prior to the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8th December, Charles and a colleague spotted the German High Seas Fleet, and he and other members of the Corps then helped to guide the British fleet's ordnance fire from the harbour, scattering the German fleet and giving time and space for the British fleet make their way out of port to engage and achieve a decisive victory over the German fleet, an event which is commemorated every year as a public holiday on the Falkland Islands. Charles later returned to Britain in the 1930s and settled in Bristol.
The Falkland Islands Volunteer Corps Award Badge was established and produced in 1925 and 1926, and was awarded to around 160 members of the Falkland Island Volunteer Corps who served between the 16th August and 31st December 1914. Sold together with copied badge roll extract.

(Dambusters and Barnes Wallis interest). Two antique marbles stated by the vendor that they were used by Barnes Wallis in his early tests, which would be part of the inspiration for the concept of the Bouncing Bomb, larger marble measuring approximately just over 1" diameter, the other smaller marble approximately just under 1", both have a textured frosted form, a brass RAF button and engraved brass plaque with inscription 'Chastise' (Operation Chastise, more commonly known as the Dambusters Raid), all mounted in a later wooden display frame with laminated photocopy of the museum card from Hydneye House School museum stating that "These marbles were used by Barnes Wallis in his original experiments at White Hill House, Effingham in 1942, kindly donated by Barnes Wallis" with signature of George Leonard 'Johnny' Johnson MBE DFM, verso, total frame size 19cm x 16cm, sold together with small information folder written by the vendor giving his history surrounding the items and how he came upon them, with photos of him at the school and when he returned in 1968.
Provenance: These items, along with other items relating to the Dambusters including marbles, bomb sight, bomb release button, etc, are stated by the vendor to have been displayed at Hydneye House School 'museum', where Etterick Maltby, father of 617 Squadron Pilot of Lancaster AJ-J (J-Johnny) David Maltby, was headmaster. The consignee of this lot is an ex-pupil of the school from 1954, who was captivated by evening lectures by visitors such as William Taynton, Paul Reveley and most of all Barnes Wallis, which inspired him and his classmates in an attempt to replicate the original experiment by Barnes Wallis that inspired his bouncing bomb at the school's swimming pool. The headmaster at the time Mr (Gerald) Brodribb, seeing the students' obvious interest and curiosity in the subject, arranged for Barnes Wallis to come and observe, and after spending the day with the pupil and his classmates, showing, explaining and observing the process, the marbles and other related items were donated to the school throughout the years. In 1968, upon a chance visit to the school before its imminent demolition, the items were given to the then ex-pupil (our vendor) by the then-headmaster Gerald Brodribb, knowing how much they meant to the pupil, who has continued to collect other Dambusters items over the years.

[Dambusters and Guy Gibson interest] Set of RAF wings and buttons, with museum card stating them to be from the uniform of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, commanding officer of 617 Squadron, who led the Dambusters Raid (Operation Chastise) comprising a set of cloth RAF wings, 12 buttons in three sizes, a framed picture of Guy Gibson and an engraved brass plaque with inscription 'Wing Com Guy Gibson VC DSO DFC', all mounted in a wooden display frame, with laminated museum card from Hydneye House School verso, stating that 'The Pilots wings and buttons from the uniform of Guy Gibson were kindly donated to Hydneye by Miss Evelyn Moore' (Evelyn Moore was married to Guy Gibson from the 23rd November 1940 until Guy Gibson's death on the 19th September 1944) and with signature of George Leonard 'Johnny' Johnson MBE DFM verso, total size of wooden frame 25.5cm x 23cm.
