Matt Cooks enlisted in the British Army in September 1989, when he joined the 1st Glosters (Gloucestershire Regiment) The following year he saw service in Belize and in 1992 was sent to Northern Ireland for his first emergency tour during The Troubles.
From 1994-95 he was on an operational tour in Bosnia, and was based in Goražde during the Bosnian War, manning observation posts and carrying out patrols, holding the record in the battalion for the longest time in an observation post at 63 days. From 1995-97 Cooks saw service in Cyprus, then from 1997-2007 further service in Britain (Colchester and Hounslow), Northern Ireland including Newtownhamilton, South Armagh where he was caught up in bombing of his base and the Royal Ulster Constabulary station, and Ballykinler as a member of the COP (Close Observation Platoon), and then Nepal where he helped train the Nepalese Army to conduct operations against Maoist forces in the aftermath of the Nepalese Royal Massacre when on 1st June 2001 nine members of the Nepalese Royal Family, including the King and Queen were killed.
In 2007 Cooks was promoted to SJT (equivalent to SGT), during the amalgamation of the R&BW with The Rifles on the 1st February 2007, later transferring to the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC), where from 2008-2012 he completed two tours of Afghanistan, stationed in Helmand Province. Matt Cooks ended his army service in 2012.

William Swain was born in 1880 in Bishop's Caundle, Sherborne, Dorset and enlisted in the Royal Engineers in February 1899. He served in South Africa during the Second Boer War, in the 9th Company of the Royal Engineers and then in its aftermath from the 4th January 1900 to the 6th December 1905. He returned to England before going on to in Egypt from the 10th September 1909 to the 16th October 1914, then with the outbreak of WW1 Swain arrived in France on the 4th November 1914 and served until the 9th January 1919. He survived the war and was demobilised / discharged in March 1920, in the 1921 census he was working as a harness maker and was married the same year.

(Waterloo and Peninsular War / Grenadier Guards Interest) 19thC Military Commonplace / Regimental book / Scrapbook, written by Daniel Collins, Grenadier Guards. The book contains approximately 73 pages (the pages dated / watermarked 1807), of handwritten notes, orders, returns, poems and more, the front cover reads 'Daniel Collins Corporal 2nd Lieut Colonel Lascelles Company, Third Battalion, First Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards, Regimental Hospital, Westminster London 15.8.29, contents include many 'Returns' detailing deaths, illness and casualties in the Grenadier Guards Regiments, including 1st and 3rd Battalions and more during the Peninsular War of 1807-1814 and the Napoleonic Wars, with dates including 15th January 1808 during campaigns in Gibraltar and Sicily, 16th July-10th December 1809 in Holland, 28th April 1811-28th April 1812 at Cadiz during the time of the siege and more dates in 1813 and 1815, including an approximately 8 page in-depth section on the Battle of Waterloo and its preceding battles, with killed and wounded list from 'Men of the 3rd Battalion First Regiment of Foot Guards after being engaged with the French' detailing soldiers who were killed or wounded, when and how it happened at the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo on the dates of 16th June, 18th June and 26th June, featuring many brigades, starting with Lieutenant Colonel Woodford's Company (who was involved at the Defence of Hougoumont during the battle).
Also included are many 'General Orders' from Horse Guards, Westminster, London, in the 1820s and 1830s, including the deaths and funerals of the Dule of York and George IV (Prince Regent), also sections with lists of soldiers in the Grenadier Guards in the 1830s from the time of Collins' own service including Daniel Collins himself, with potential orders from Lascelles detailing equipment and supplies of items from killed soldiers which were to be sold and orders / checklists for equipment for current soldiers. The book also includes many poems, articles on subjects like Roman Antiquities, the story of the Mortar from Cadiz, lists of diseases and also a family tree of Daniel Collins, with the dates and times of the birth, christening and sometimes deaths, funeral and burial of his children.
Daniel Collins was born around 1807 in Halifax near York, and worked as a wool comber before enlisting in the British Army on the 13th July 1825 at the age of 18. He joined the Grenadier Guards (Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards), where he would serve for 24 years rising through the ranks from Private, Corporal, Serjeant and Quartermaster Serjeant before being discharged in June 1849 due to ill health, with his character report being 'Very Good'. Sold together with his service record and discharge papers.

Dodge Canadian Forestry Corps (C.F.C.), Canadian Silver War Badge numbered C45768 verso, three 210th Battalion 'Frontiersmen' badges in three variants, all with Crichton's Moose Jaw maker's mark (two are faint), a 210th brass shoulder title, a Canadian Overseas Forestry Battalion maple leaf badge and a Saskatchewan Veterans Civil Security Corps badge.
Ernest Dodge (Frederick’s older brother) was born around the year 1881 in Somerset, before enlisting in the Royal Army Medical Corps in December 1891. Ernest Dodge would serve in South Africa from the 23rd May 1900 to the 17th May 1903 and be discharged in November 1911, where in the years following would move to Canada, settling in Saskatchewan
Frederick Bazley Dodge (Ernest’s brother) was born on the 1st February 1893 in Liddington, Wiltshire, and whilst living and working as a farmer in Bengough, Saskatchewan, Canada he attested for service in the newly formed 210th 'Frontiersmen' Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces (CEF) on the 1st April 1916 at the age of 23 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Upon arrival in England aboard the SS Carpathia in April 1917 the battalion was absorbed into a range of CEF units such as the 46th Battalion and 1st Mounted, others joined specialised battalions based on their civilian trade. Frederick seemingly didn't embark to England with the rest of the battalion, likely due to health problems, as on the 21st May 1917 on his hospital record he is listed still in Moose Jaw. On the 31st August 1917, Frederick Dodge joined the Canadian Forestry Corps (6th), likely owing to his civilian work as a farmer. He arrived in England aboard the SS Metagama on the 14th December 1917. During his service he would be awarded the Silver War Badge, Frederick survived the war and was discharged on the 5th April 1919 (records state he was also ‘discharged’ on the 13th March 1918) due to multiple health conditions such as Myalgia, Rheumatism, etc, that seemed to affect him throughout his service. He returned to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada where he would live until he died in September 1972.

Arthur Edward Savigar was born on the 21st August 1880 in Cardiff, and in 1906 he joined Bristol Police. In 1910/1911 he was stationed in and around the Rhondda, Wales, where he served during the Tonypandy riots of 1910-1911, a series of violent confrontations between striking coal miners, part of the Cumbrian Combine Strike (September 1910-August 1911) between the South Wales Miners' Federations and the coal mine owners over pay and conditions. The strike turned violent on 7th and 8th November 1910 when the miners clashed with Glamorgan Constabulary and the reinforcements from Bristol Police. The then Home Secretary Winston Churchill decided to send in the military in response to the violence, a decision still debated today. Around 500 civilians and 80 police were injured, and one miner was killed. A. Savigar is listed in the 'official list of police casualties in mid-Rhondda and Aberdare Valley Strikes' in appendix F during the fighting at Llwynypia, November 7th 1910, where he suffered a 'contused knee and thigh'.
After the start of WW1 Arthur enlisted and entered France on the 7th March 1915 with the Royal Garrison Artillery, serving with the 10th Siege Battery part of the 1st Army heavy artillery. He was discharged and sent to the reserve on the 16th January 1919, and after the war he continued his service with the Bristol Police, going on to be awarded the Bristol City Police Long Service Medal on the 9th May 1928 and then the 22 year bar on the 15th February 1933, Arthur Savigar died on the 23rd October 1941 in Bristol.
Arthur's son Vivian Albert Savigar was born on the 20th January 1920 in Bristol, he likely joined the Royal Engineers between May 1940 and 1941, and after the war Vivian continued his service in the Territorial Army as a Sergeant with the 57th (City and Country of Bristol) Signal Regiment (Horfield), Vivian died on the 30th October 1972
